What does engagement rate tell you?
Follower-based engagement rate compares the interactions a post receives with the size of your audience. It can help you compare your own posts over time and give brands context beyond follower count. It is not the percentage of unique followers who interacted: one person may take more than one action, and non-followers can engage too.
How to calculate Instagram engagement
Take a consistent sample of recent posts and calculate average likes and comments per post. Add average saves and shares if you have them, divide by your follower count, and multiply by 100. Use the same sample for each input. Leaving saves or shares blank treats them as zero, so a public-data estimate may be lower than one based on full insights.
What is a good engagement rate?
Our broad reference ranges label under 1% as low, 1% to under 3% as average, 3% to under 6% as good, and 6% or more as high. They are illustrative guidance, not universal platform statistics. Audience size, niche, geography, content format, giveaways, and how widely a post reaches non-followers can change the result. Compare like-for-like accounts and inspect the quality of comments.
From inputs to insight.
A creator with 10,000 followers averages 350 likes, 25 comments, 40 saves, and 15 shares. That is 430 interactions per post: 430 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 4.30%. With likes and comments alone, the rate is 3.75%.
Results depend on the accuracy and definitions of your inputs. Campaign performance varies by audience, niche, content format, geography, and attribution method. These tools provide estimates and context, not guarantees.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use one post or several?
Use several comparable recent posts for a more representative estimate. Keep the same post sample for likes, comments, saves, and shares, and consider sponsored content separately if that is what you are evaluating.
Can I calculate it without saves and shares?
Yes. Leave those inputs blank and they are treated as zero. The result represents the interactions you included; it is not a complete measure of all activity.
Is this the same as engagement by reach?
No. This tool divides by followers. A reach-based engagement rate divides interactions by accounts reached, while a views-based rate divides by views. Label your metric clearly when comparing results.
Why can engagement exceed 100%?
Interactions are not unique people. A person can like, comment, save, and share; non-followers may also interact. This calculation can therefore exceed 100% without a mathematical error.
Does this tool connect to Instagram?
No. Enter your own averages from your insights or a consistent public sample. No account access or login is required.
